Oh. My. Fugly. God. Brilliant...I couldn't have loved it more. The scale is epic, everything just aghghghgghgghhghgg I can't say anything it was so amazing! I laughed, I cried (literally...and I never had before for any movie)....just go see it, Browncoat or not. I bought four friends, one who I got addicted to Firefly and thought it was the best movie she'd ever seen, called it "fun in the pants", and now wants to marry Joss. THe others, not ever seen Firefly, really liked it as well. So please support and go see it! If I had a car here at college I'd be going tomorrow .

It was a dark film, darker than I expected (in keeping with the darker episodes of the series more than the lighter ones), and so I did not expect that I'd want to see it again in the theater. Except, now it has been a dozen hours since I saw it, and I DO INDEED want to see it again, and will do so.
I was also - and this may sound strange - but I was really pleased to see the kind of audience the film had. It was a smart audience, dare I say a geeky-smart turnout, the best kind of people.
And the laughs in the film are smart laughs that I felt comfortable in laughing out loud at.
My guess is the second week will see a drop in business, but the third will hold and perhaps rise as word of mouth gets out.

I'm not a fan of the show. I saw it once and was bored to tears. I didn't like the country western feel of it either.
However, the previews looked great. I was planning to see it this week.
But reading that it's so dark, I've reconsidered. I don't like dark movies. Oh well. I hope he doesn't make Wonder Woman really dark. But knowing Joss, he will.

I saw this movie back in June in Chicago at the Cant Stop The Signal advanced screening.... and right there I knew it was the best movie I have ever seen. I went to see it TWICE in a row yesterday... as in... I went to one showing, and the one DIRECTLY after it. I am not kidding when I say I am going to see this 15 times. Thats my goal. And judging about how great of a movie this is... 15 is sorta a low number. I also have a Jayne hat... which I was wearing last night during both showings... along with my Blue Sun shirt...

I just got back from seeing it. I thought it was good, but not great. I think the best compliment I can give it is that it got better and better as it went, ending with a bang.

First, my thoughts posted from another forum, since I don't feel like retyping them: I feel the need to discuss this, and I don't see how I can do it spoiler-free. SO BE WARNED, THERE ARE SPOILERS BELOW! I am traumatized. They killed Wash. My favorite character from the series, and they killed him. I was in shock for about five minutes afterword. And then they started to kick the crap out of all the other characters. I figured after they killed Book (which I'll get to in a minute), everyone else was safe. I've never been sadder to have been wrong. On killing Book, that made sense in the story. When I saw what Ron Glass looked like the first time they showed him, I figured the actor might not live through 2 sequels (fuingers crossed), so they might have to kill him off. His death was done well. The only complaint I have is that the whole "Book knows more about war and killing than he should/Book has strange connections to the Alliance that enable him free passage on an Aliiance vessel" can never be explained since the only guy that knew about it is dead. I don't think the Reavers were played up as the mythical unbeatable foes they were portrayed as in the series. Apparently no one in the Verse ever thought about shooting one before Zoe. I could not believe the revelation about the Reavers' origins. On a more technical note, the set was amazing. The long oner at the beginning of the film that walked throught the enitre ship was amazing. Apparently this time the second floor was built on top of the first instead of on another stage. The dialogue at times was overly hokey, even for Joss Whedon, which is saying a lot. That was the main complaint of the non-Firefly watchers I went with, and I couldn't blame them for it one bit. There should have been some explanation for the old fashioned way they were talking considering the western aspect ever-present in the series was almost non-existent in the film. Wash's final lines were terrible, which is a shame. Of course, the CG was amazing. Sound effects during the final battle in space were disappointing since they had gone most of the movie without them. The stunts were great, and Summer Glau must have done most or all of her fight scenes as they showed her face a LOT in them. She was fantastic. Finally, the nitpicky stuff. Mal would not paint the name of the ship on the side of it considering he's trying to be noticed as little as possible. Simon seemed to be told a lot in the first scene when he rescued River that he didn't seem to recall during the series. Jayne seemed to care about hurting the alliance ion this film while he only cared about himself in the series. It seems to me he would have quit before they headed for Miranda, unless the bond he shared with Book was enough to drive him towards vengeance. And Inara trying to fight the Operative? Who was she kidding? Oh, and the little spin Mal did as The Operative charged at him wth the sword? He totally learned that move when Atherton Wing used it on him in Shindig. Sweet!

I'm surprised so few people here have seen this. And how is everyone can stand to be spoiler free?! Argh, I wanna talk about this so bad! I guess I'll just have to wait abit longer to discuss, but i gave my spoilery comments above. I'll go with non-spolier for now. Captain Mal's countrified speech may not go over well with a Non-Firefly audience. I admit, it kind of got on my nerves when I first started watching the TV show. (I'm over that now It will not go over with a non-Firefly audience. I know this because I went with three non-Firefly watchers, and as I said above, they hated it (the speech, not the movie). They thought the dialogue was horrible. And sadly, there were places even I thought the dialogue was bad. And I'm used to Whedon-speak and Firefly-speak. I hate to say it, but Joss didn't do as good of a job writing this movie as he could have, evidenced by his success in his hourlong shows. The plot was dead-on perfect IMO. The dialogue just got overly countrified at times. Seeing as how the western aspect of the series was almost completely overshadowed by the sci fi aspect in the movie, it seems really out of place, therefore being even more confusing. My friends were also groaning at the "Kaylee loves Simon" parts, which I admit were overdone. Obviously, you need to initiate the non-Firefly viewers about their unrequited love, but there are more subtle ways of doing it. Afterwords my friends said they liked the movie, but I got the feeling they were just saying that because they knew how much I loved it, and they didn't want me to feel bad about dragging them to it. They thought it was just another decent sci-fi movie. When I asked them if they thought it was worth spending $6, they sort of changed the subject. I realize the above comments are a buit harsh, but I'm trying to look at things from an objective point of view. I want Serenity to do well. I need Serenity to do well, because I don't want this to be the last I ever see of these characters. But I have this lingering suspiscion it's not going to do to well, because even a die-hard fan like me can see the flaws in it. I loved Serenity, and I would have been bawling a few times if my three friends weren't there. I'm going to see it again tomorrow by myself loved it so much.

Well.......I just got back from seeing it. I almost didn't go as I have been sort of down as of late with alot going on, but I must say I am more than happy that I went. My friends were also groaning at the "Kaylee loves Simon" parts, which I admit were overdone. Obviously, you need to initiate the non-Firefly viewers about their unrequited love, but there are more subtle ways of doing it. They thought it was just another decent sci-fi movie. When I asked them if they thought it was worth spending $6, they sort of changed the subject. My friends who went, were more than happy with the movie. I went with 3 other people, only 1 of which has seen/owned the Firefly dvd set. The other 2 were just as happy as me. Also the crowd was really into Kaylee and Simon. What else to say other than.........Bring On The Sequels! Please!!

I loved every minute of the flick. And I've never heard an audience laugh and gasp as one as they did during this flick.

I think that may seem that way because of the way this "sub board" is hidden away.

I went to see it with my husband, who hadn't watched Firefly, and he really liked it -- which is saying a lot, because he's really picky. I thought it was great. The way it constantly swung back and forth from humor to tragedy in an instant had me laughing and crying at the same time. It was like an emotional roller coaster. I didn't have any problem with the dialog, like some people seemed to. I thought it was all true to character. If someone doesn't like the westerny talk, I suppose it might be annoying, but that doesn't mean it was bad. Overall, I thought it was a damn good movie, and I think anyone with an interest in sci-fi should see it.

I absolutely loved it, every second of it and every jump, gasp and teary eyed moment. I thought Joss did an excellent job writing this and the characters were as wonderful as ever.

I have never seen the TV episodes, and I agree with your assessment. According to boxofficemojo.com, the film only made about $10 million this weekend. I've heard that a film needs to make back twice its budget before a studio starts seeing profits. The reason is that the theaters themselves take a big chunk of the gross. Anyway, Serenity cost about $40 million (not including advertising costs), so it would need to make at least $80 million. I really don't see that happening. Of course, I'm not taking into account DVD sales.

OK, I hated the show.
I said earlier that I was unsure that I would see the movie, because people said it was dark.
But I LOVED IT!!!!
It was hilarious and had fabulous action. I thought it was one of the best-written movies I've seen. I don't like the countrified speech, but didn't think it was too heavy-handed.
***SPOILER ALERT!!! *** I didn't think it was THAT dark, but then I wasn't attached to any characters from watching the show. I had only seen it once. Important secondary characters usually get killed in movies. I also thought everyone was gonna die at the end. It wouldn't have surprised me, knowing Josh. They didn't, so I was happy. I liked the little sub plot of love between Simon and Kaylee.
I'm so happy it got two thumbs up!!!! Yay! I'm sorry it didn't do that much business. That's a shame.
I posted a raving review of it on yahoo.com.

First-run theatres actually only get about 15% of their take opening week, the rest is delivered to the studios. Thus the high prices of popcorn.

I was reading the yahoo user reviews. They were mostly terrific. But one bad one had a good point.
SPOILERS!
If the Reavers are so out-of-control with madness that they cut up their own faces and ravenously torment everything in their paths, how do they work together and keep their ships in such fabulous working order? I thought of that during the film and saw someone else point out the same thing. Did they ever talk about that on the show?

That's a good point...but if you remember when they were reavering-out Serenity, Mal told Kaylee to make sure that it looked a little extra rickety. I'm guessing that they just overrun any ships they can, make them their own, and ditch them when they stop working.
