Argh! I agree this is definitely a good cause - but being nowhere near CA and a completist, this just means I'll have to go the eBay route. This, IMO, is the "classic" Spike look, and I could never understand why they didn't release him this way (I had thought maybe to not compete with the upcoming Angel and Spike Deluxe Figures - but they were spread so far apart in release dates *and* there's no competing figure in the Deluxe anyway. Same for Angel!
Actually, looking at the picture more, I *think* I've already got this figure from customizing my own with the bake n pop (err - boil n pop to most). So maybe I'll be okay. :-) This would have been a cool exlusive - argh, I guess there will always be someone not happy about something, I just wish there was an easy, non-scalper price way to get every single figure made.

So you can sign up for appointments? Hmmm... If I give blood, then I'll be all tired and out of it the rest of the day at the SDCC. What's a girl to do?

I agree it's for a good cause, I just wish there was some other way to get it besides Ebay. I've only just managed to get last years Spike.

It seems odd they don't donate figures that are more readily available that may not be selling well. I mean I'm sure there's a sizeable number of us that would buy this Spike variation, so why just donate them? Obviously there will be some people who donate blood just to get the figure. But it seems to me that the number of fans who can attend this function and give blood just to get this Spike would be cmparatively low. And if it's an incentive/gift, then any regular figure would be just as generous a donation, right? Otherwise a bunch of non-fans end up with these and then sell them on eBay for inflated prices back to us, who would have gladly bought them to start with. It just seems to be an odd business choice - though I guess it's possible that DST *might* offer these for sale too maybe? I mean it says 700 - could it maybe have originally been a choice for one of the variants, they ran so many of them and then decided -forwhatever reason- not to offer this version? Again, considering how many people bemoaned the lack of a "classic Spike" this seems odd.
I dunno, just trying to figure out why some things happen the way they do. I'll check with DST and see if they maybe have any of these for sale. Heck, I'd even make a donation to the Red Cross or whoever in exchange for one if they want to totally go the philanthropic route...which actually is a pretty cool idea! They could donate these to said Charity, who would then offer them to people for a minimum donation or blood donation should you wish to go that route. Now THAT would be cool as practically anyone would be able to get him (not sure how much of hassle overseas transactions would be, but I''d always be willing to help out a fellow fan as a mediary or whatever).
It seems to me that this method would do far more to bring in some "good" to the Red Cross/whoever - as someone else posted, probably the majority of people giving blood would probably do so anyway. Whaddya think? I wonder if there's anyway to bring this up to them (in time to get a Spikey?). :-) :-) :-)

Is there an age limit for donating blood? I'm only 16 and I know some places wouldn't take me..... I really want this spike though, but as Maria said that would ruin the rest of the day.

Newton- It would be cool if dst made a 'charity' figure. That way buffy fans would be getting it, and the money would be donated to a good cause.
I'll be looking out for the spikey on ebay too, but i would prefer that if i were going to spend ridiculous amounts on toys, that the money was going to a good cause. Although techincally, the person donating the blood is doing the good cause. MMmm. I don't make sense.

I think this is a cool idea! And as exclusives go, it's not going to be essential for most of us to chase down, which is good. I already have a figure like this- or I will if I ever get around to doing a head swap with S5 Spike and Just Rewards Spike. I was going to post a bunch of info about donating blood, but then I got lazy, and the Red Cross has it all much better organized at their site anyway: www.redcross.org/services/biomed/0,1082,0_320_,00.html

well it's say "This year, Diamond Select Toys is contributing 700 "Spike" action figures from the Angel TV series to this year's blood drive." But it doesn't say that the item is limited to 700.

Browncoat - you make perfect sense. Then again, I'm probably not the person to rely on for interpreting sensical statements...but it made sense to me. :-)
Toodles - good point, and I'm hoping that means that "the rest" of them will either be something we can order from DST's store, or get as a special exclusive or something. Heck, I'd even prefer the signed figure route before eBay! (I'd much rather my money go first to charity, secondly to DST so they can use it to design and make more figures!{see BrnCoat - I got your message!)). :-) And, sure, no one "forces" you to buy something off eBay (which I'm sure someone would've pointed out soon) enough) - but the point is that if the only way a figure is offered is a very exclusive route, then - apart from buying a plane ticket and going to SDCC myself of course <grin> - would be eBay to ensure I have a complete collection. :-) Anyway, I'm in one of those moods today where I actually feel pretty good and have a strangely hopeful outlook for the world - and thus the importance of a "complete collection of action figures" just isn't rating as one of those incredibly important things right now. :-) And since I do open all my figures, this figure is indistinguishable from a custom made one (as UrbanDruid pointed out {cool name by the way!}) - and I've already made one of these myself via the head (and slightly hard hand) "pop 'n' swap" method. So what am I whining about? :-) Thus I officially declare that I, NewtonDKC, shall not whine about action figures the rest of..well, today at least. :-) Or at least not this particular figure (of course they may announce a limited edition "Season 5 Buffy" only available for 5 year or longer members of the Radicals or something - then yeah, I'd probably get my biatchin' gear back on. :-)

Last year, 500 T1 Season 5 Spikes were given out and they ran out of the figures out the drive. This indicates that over 500 people donated blood and they said that last year was a record breaker but I can't remember how many exactly. I'm guessing that DST bumped up the number to 700 Spikes in order to assure everyone who donates gets a "Thank You" gift.

Oh... This is next month I feel stupid ;D
Great figure for a great cause, real cool of DST.
This is how Spike should have been made instead of Season 5 Spike. A must for MOC collectors I hope DST makes more of these available.

I think DST has only given away bagged figures. And this one is carded. And everything ends up on ebay but you have to pay ebay prices...which probably wont be cheap for a figure like this.
I guess I will try to customize one but then I'll have to get a vamp and season 5 Spike...
