Hey gang!! I am very curious to hear any tips you all have on general maintenance of customs. Biggest problem I seem to have is that a lot of my older customs have become very sticky and collect dust and it sticks to them. I have tried washing them with soap and water but I am very scared to be so rough with them this way. Anyone have the same issue and what have you done to preserve them, or prevent this from happening? I also have a few that have some chips that need to be filled and painted...best filler and paint? Thanks all!

hi pj,
sticky paint is not a good sign. its basically cheap paint. in stead of washing it i would repaint it with better quality paint. no primer, no seal. look for a nice matte paint that is non washable.
cracks and repair, I believe you know super sculpey. I suggest magic sculpt. It can air dry and harden and is water friendly. i used this to repair Jess's lilah with an ax in season 4 where there were multiple cracks n chips when i had received her.
when cleaning say the body i would use alcohol to clean and remove paint. little alcohol n water goes a long way.
normally paint worn or scratch is common, sticky paint is high glossy based, not matte based and you'll run into that problem later on down the line. but the majority of my customs clean up fairly well with a dry paint brush and maybe a new coat of paint here and there.
i use folk art paint and magic sculpt which you can get from walmart and ebay. Hope this helps.
When I first started repainting it took me a few tries and failed attempts, but buying the single bottles of paint from folk art was the real deal.
When in doubt you can rebox and reseal or like DST with their exclusive variants zip lock baggy. I did the baggy with Demon Hunting Piper and she's clean and dust free as the day I stuck her in that bag.

In all fairness I would recommend contacting the customizer that made the figure to see the original paint used and to match it as closely as possible to fix the paint work or at least update it.

This actuallY has nothing to do with cheap paint. Ive used the same paint for years and this only seems to happen on certain figures. It happens a lot with the 6" figures because the plastic that is used for the parts seems to leech some sort of oil over time (which is why the figures can smell strongly when you remove them from the packaging)
It can also be a side effect of sculpey that isn't cured properly. Oils can leech out of it.
Personally, i have repaired on of my own statues by using nail varnish remover to remove the sticky coating. However, this did remove some of the paint...
You could wash it down with soapy water on a brush and try to get it all off. and then perhaps reseal using a stronger sealer. Other than that, all i could suggest is putting them inside some sort of sealed clear display box? Though i know that glass cabinets can still get dusty.
I guess its just maintenance :/
