I have never made molds, but I hope to learn. If there ever comes a time when I want to replicate one of my art pieces, I wanted to know if it was possible to mold and cast an art piece that was already painted. Would it damage the paint job? I usually paint with acrylics.

Ive had some luck making moulds from painted parts without any problem. Depends on the silicone i guess. There can be some oil that could leach into the paint but if your paint is sealed, it should be fine. Maybe do a test if you can first?

Yeh Josh, that will work for a face but for a full figure it wouldn't be adequate enough. Unfortunately an entire body and legs and arms present a problem when using Silicone, its not the easiest job but is doable

What kind of resin would be best to use when the mold is made? Most of my pieces are made out of sculpey, but what kind of resign should I put in it? Thanks for the replies.

If you are making a silicone mould, you can use all different kind of resin. I use Polyurethane (Fast Cast) resin. it usually sets within 5 minutes and is relatively cheap and very strong Hope that helps

Is that what you used when you made copies of you SPN busts for example? Would I be able to paint it with acrylic?
