I have never made molds, but I hope to learn. If there ever comes a time when I want to replicate one of my art pieces, I wanted to know if it was possible to mold and cast an art piece that was already painted. Would it damage the paint job? I usually paint with acrylics.

Ive had some luck making moulds from painted parts without any problem. Depends on the silicone i guess. There can be some oil that could leach into the paint but if your paint is sealed, it should be fine. Maybe do a test if you can first?

Yeh Josh, that will work for a face but for a full figure it wouldn't be adequate enough. Unfortunately an entire body and legs and arms present a problem when using Silicone, its not the easiest job but is doable ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

What kind of resin would be best to use when the mold is made? Most of my pieces are made out of sculpey, but what kind of resign should I put in it? Thanks for the replies.

If you are making a silicone mould, you can use all different kind of resin. I use Polyurethane (Fast Cast) resin. it usually sets within 5 minutes and is relatively cheap and very strong ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Hope that helps

So does Polyurethane harden like any finished sculpture? Is that what you used when you made copies of you SPN busts for example? Would I be able to paint it with acrylic?
