My friend has some items over in the US that she's sending over to me (in the UK) like buffy figures and things and all together the weight is 12lbs 5 ounces and according to the USPS site the cheapest is like $60 - which is ridiculous! We've both sent items abroad that have cost less than that but have weighed around the same!
Can anyone shed any light on this? I don't want any insurance or anything, nothing fancy, just the cheapest way to send over to the UK!
The prices aren't due to rise until 2013 apparently so why so expensive now?

Have you ever visit a USPS Store and get informed? Sometimes those are just guidelines. Theres about 8 different kinds of Services, Im sure there must be a cheap one. Im european too (austria) and have all my stuff shipped from U.S, and have paid about 60$ shipping for Premium Format Statues for example... dont know how much they weight, but seems like thats the regular price when shipping overseas, not to forget about the customs...

Well I'm in the United States but I never sent anything over seas that was over 12 lbs. I remember sending an Avengers figure and it was ball park $18-20 as International First Class shipping through USPS. If you don't care about your figures being mint on card you can get it shipped loose - If your friend can swing by the post office and pick up a Internatioanl Flat Rate Box and fit everything for the cost of the box then it can be mailed that way perhaps a little cheaper. Hope that helps.

I used the USPS cost calculator and for a package weighing 12 pounds the cheapest to the U.K. is Priority mail international (flat rate box) for $48.00...and they shouldnt add anything for packing materials since you can get a flat rate box at the post office for free you can check it out at www.usps.gov

I've shipped boxes weighing 10-12 lbs that have cost $100 or more. It depends on the country too... Australia costs more than say, Canada from the US
