“Rogue,” Logan said. “I didn’t think you’d actually take it. So do you feel any different?”
“A little,” Rogue said with her southern accent. “Honestly, no. I didn’t have much power at first anyway. My only power was to hurt people.”
“That is not true,” Logan said. “You are very special and your powers will progress in time.”
“What powers?” Rogue asked. “Have you not been following this whole conversation? I took the cure, and now, I am free. I am free of hurting people.”
“Rogue, I think you made the biggest mistake of your life,” Logan said.
“Yeah, but like you said, you’re not my father,” Rogue said. She started to walk out of Logan’s room. But Logan grabbed her arm.
“Listen to me,” Logan said. “You are still my responsibility! As long as you are here.”
“What happened at the battle?” Rogue asked.
“I had to kill Jean,” Logan said. He started getting choked up.
“God, Logan,” Rogue said. She wrapped her arms around his neck and gave him a big hug. “I am so sorry.”
“It’s okay kid,” Logan said returning the hug. A tear ran down his cheek. “We’re all each other’s got. Except for Bobby.” He gave a small laugh.
“Are you going to be okay?” Rogue asked. “I am going to meet Bobby for lunch after his training in the Danger Room.”
“They had a training in the Danger Room?” Logan asked.
“You didn’t know?” Rogue asked.
“No,” Logan said. “But you run along kid.”
“Take care, Logan,” Rogue said. “I’ll see you later.
“They are everywhere!” Kitty yelled. She phased through a wall as A Sentinel started crushing the building with its foot. “Bobby!”
“Coming, Kitty!” Bobby yelled. He ran over to the Sentinel and froze it’s foot to the ground. The Sentinel easily broke free and continued after Kitty.
“Somebody help!” Kitty yelled. She phased through a series of more walls. This reminded her of her recent battle against Juggernaut.
“Hold on, Miss Kitty,” Beast yelled. He grabbed onto the Sentinel’s leg and crawled up.
“Be careful, Hank!” Storm yelled. She flew up to assist him. “Hank? Where are you?” Everything above the Sentinel’s torso, was cloudy. “Hank!” The Sentinel’s arm hit Storm and she went and hit a pile of cars.
“Storm!” Colossus yelled. He ran over to Storm. She was fine. Colossus blocked a piece of the building from hitting Storm. “We should get out of here.”
“Not until the job is finished,” Storm said. She jumped up and her and Colossus ran over to Bobby. “Any sign of Kitty?”
“Not yet,” Bobby said. “I know she is inside, but that is about it.”
“We have to get inside,” Storm said. “Peter! Bobby! Get in there and help her out.”
“Right,” both men said. They ran inside.
“There is the Sentinel’s foot!” Bobby yelled.
“I see it,” Colossus yelled. “But, where’s Kitty?”
“Here!” Kitty yelled. She phased through a wall and joined Colossus and Bobby. “I don’t know if we can take this thing. I think we need Logan.”
“Way ahead of you kid,” Logan appeared next to the three younger X-Men. “Where is ‘Big Blue’?”
“Beast is somewhere on the Sentinel,” Bobby said. “How’s Rogue?”
“Not now, lover boy,” Logan said. “We have a machine to destroy.” His claws popped out of his hands. “Let’s try the same thing as last time, Tin Man.”
“You got it,” Colossus said. His metal surrounded his body. He grabbed Logan and threw him up in the air. As fast as Logan went up he came back down.
“What did you see?” Kitty asked. She and Bobby helped Logan up.
“Well, Storm and Hank are up there beating the crap out of its head, and that is doing jack sh…” Logan was interrupted.
“Logan!” Storm yelled as she flew down. “Listen, Hank is up there trying to knock it’s head off. Why don’t I fly you up there and you give us a hand?”
“Sounds like a plan to me,” Logan said.
“Bobby, try to freeze his feet and his arms. He is doing an awful lot of swinging up there,” Storm said. “Kitty. Peter. I need you two to help Bobby as much as you possibly can.”
“We’re on it,” Kitty said.
“So, don’t you miss it?” Jubilee asked.
“Miss it?” Rogue retorted.
“Yeah. I mean the thrill of being one of the X-Men. You have seen more action than any of us,” Jubilee said. “I don’t think I would have given that up for the world.”
“I don’t know,” Alison said. “I think I would like to be normal again.”
“But once you’re normal, that is when they start to come after you,” Jubilee said.
“Who?” Rogue asked.
“The Morlocks,” Jubilee answered. “They are an underground society of mutants. They live in sewers and try to hide from the world.”
“Wow,” Rogue said. “Listen, I should be going. I’m meeting Bobby for lunch.”
“Okay,” Jubilee said. “I’ll catch you later. I have some studying to do for Professor McCoy’s class.”
“See ya,” Rogue said. She started walking to the kitchen to make some sandwiches. She didn’t know that Alison Crestmere had followed her. Alison, also known as Magma, knew what it was like to have a power you didn’t want. Rogue actually would rather have her power. After all, if Alison concentrated on controlling her powers, they would be pretty awesome.
“You didn’t get the cure for Bobby did you?” Alison asked.
“No,” Rogue said. “Not just for Bobby.”
“Rogue!” Alison yelled. “You can’t do that to yourself. Trust me, a guy is not worth it.”
“Bobby is,” Rogue said.
“Trust me. No guy is worth your powers. Your powers were something you obtained at birth! No one has the power to take that away,” Alison said.
“Leech did,” Rogue said. She put the cheese the two sandwiches.
“I don’t think he had much of a choice,” Alison said. She grabbed an apple out of the refrigerator. “Think about what I said.” She started walking out of the kitchen.
“It’s too late now,” Rogue said.
“Maybe for you,” Alison said.
“That was killer,” Bobby said. He walked out of the Danger Room with Peter and Kitty following him. Storm, Logan, and Hank stayed behind.
“Thanks for the invite,” Logan said.
“Listen, it was nothing personal,” Storm said. “You are obviously torn up about Jean.”
“Is it that obvious?” Logan said sarcastically. “So, you thought I would endanger our students.”
“I couldn’t take the chance so I invited Hank,” Storm said.
“Listen, after I killed Jean and you started running this academy, I have taken on a daily class and helped battle whatever comes along. Don’t leave me in the dark again,” Logan said. He looked over at Hank who wasn’t speaking.
“Shouldn’t you be heading back to the President any day now?” Logan asked.
“My services to him are no longer needed. They are needed here,” Hank said. He walked out of the Danger Room.
“You know, I miss her too,” Storm said. She followed Hank out.
The next day, everything started out normal. The students were attending their classes as usual, but then Hank popped into Storm’s office with some breaking news.
“The cure isn’t as permanent as we thought,” Hank said. “You must get me Marie.”
“At once,” Storm said. She ran out of her office and started running down the halls.
“What is it?” Logan caught up with her. “I heard Hank yelling all the way down the hall.”
“Do you have Rogue in class right now?” Storm asked.
“No,” Logan said. “She has a free period right now. What is going on?”
“The cure isn’t going to last,” Storm said. The two of them were now running up the stairs to Rogue’s room. They knocked on the door and nobody answered.
“It’s locked,” Logan said. He tried to kick the door down. It’s not going to budge. The one person who has ever created a door I couldn’t get through, is Iceman. I think they are inside. Together.” Logan and Storm looked at each other and then started pounding on the door.
“Get Kitty,” Logan said.
“No time,” Storm said. She looked up towards the sky and concentrated. A burst of lightning came down and made a whole in the wall. Logan and Storm stepped inside.
“Rogue?” Logan asked. He looked over on the bed and saw an unconscious Bobby. “No!” He went over and tried to resuscitate him by giving him mouth to mouth. “Where’s Rogue?”
“She’s in here,” Storm said. She walked over to the closet and saw Rogue rocking back in forth on the floor.
“I didn’t mean to hurt him,” Rogue said. “I’m supposed to be cured.”
By the next hour, everyone in the school knew about Rogue and Bobby. “Ororo! A couple of teens in love isn’t as bad as what is to come. If Rogue’s cure wore off, that means that every other mutants’ will. Magneto, Mystique, all of them,” Beast said. “I think today is the day that we need to pick a new group of elite X-Men to go and fight in the next battle.”
“Then you pick it!” Logan said. “Rogue and Bobby are physically and emotionally hurt, and we are helping them! Storm and I will give you the students records and you pick who goes in the new teams. Is that okay with you?”
“Fine,” Hank said. “Ororo?”
“I agree,” Storm said. “My students are the most important thing, especially the ones that are currently hurt. My records are in the top drawer of my desk.”
“Is the boy going to…” Hank started.
“He’ll be fine,” Storm said. “As long as we can take care of him. Logan, why don’t you talk to Rogue.”
“Sure thing,” Logan said.
“I believe you all know why you have been called here,” Beast said. “The cure is not as permanent as we thought and now Magneto and his army will once again be able to fight against us. We have come into agreement that we are in need of more X-Men to join are fight. I will start calling students today, which I feel are capable of this. The first five are: Alison Crestmere a.k.a. Magma. Second, Jubilation Lee a.k.a. Jubilee. Third, Warren Worthington III a.k.a. Angel. Fourth, Remy Lebleau a.k.a. Gambit. Fifth, and as much as I would like to bring you all on the team, the fifth is a new faculty member: Kurt Wagner a.k.a. Nightcrawler.”
“Rogue?” Logan asked. He walked through the hole in her wall. “Are you okay?” Rogue sat on her bed.
“No, Logan,” Rogue said. “I almost killed my boyfriend. What happened?”
“Hank just found out that the cure isn’t permanent,” Logan said. “I’m sorry.”
“I wish they would have told me that when they stuck the needle in me,” Rogue said. She started crying. “Why does being a mutant have to be so difficult?”
“Others have it worse,” a voice said. It was Nightcrawler. “Come with me Rogue. I have to travel to visit a dying friend. Would you come with me?”
“Why?” Rogue asked.
“Because, I have to show you that others are a lot worse than you,” Nightcrawler said. “Now, take my hand.”
“I am going too,” Logan said. He grabbed Nightcrawler’s other hand.
“I can’t believe he chose us!” Jubilee told her friend, Alison. She tied her pouch back around her waster.
“Yeah,” Alison said. “It’s weird. Hey, do you want to go check on Rogue?”
“Yes, we probably should,” Jubilee said. They walked up the steps and saw the big hole in her wall. “Wow, I didn’t think it was this bad.” The girls stepped through the hole.
“Rogue?” Alison asked. “Are you in here?” There was no sign of her.
“She’s not here,” Jubilee said.
“It would appear that way,” a voice from behind them said. The two girls turned around to see a fellow classmate. It was Emma Frost. There was silence for a few seconds. “That’s not really what you think of me, is it, Jubilee?”
“Stay out of my mind, Emma!” Jubilee said.
“You know it is against the rules to use your powers on other students,” Alison said.
“It’s also against school rules to have a boy locked in your room, but that didn’t stop Rogue,” Emma said. “What do think Storm will do to her when she returns?”
“Get out!” Jubilee said. “Or is someone just upset that no matter how rich she is, she wasn’t chosen today?”
“There’s always tomorrow,” Emma said. She flipped her shiny, blond hair and left Rogue’s room.
“What do you think they will do to Rogue when she gets back?” Jubilee said. She turned to Alison.
“I have no clue,” Alison said. “We better go. We are going to be later for Professor McCoy’s class. Did you ever finish that paper for the class?”
“Just barely,” Jubilee said. “I had to copy Warren’s notes, but I got it done.”
“Boy, Warren is something, huh?” Alison asked.
“Yeah,” Jubilee said. “Are you two an item?”
“Unofficially,” Alison said. “I’m kind of waiting for him to make the first move, but we hang out a lot. It’s cool that we were both chosen to join the X-Men.”
“Us three, Professor Lebleau, and the new Professor. What was his name?” Jubilee asked.
“His name is Nightcrawler or Kurt Wagner. Don’t you remember seeing him a couple years ago?” Alison asked. “Didn’t he help you out of that cell thing at Alkali Lake?”
“Oh, yeah,” Jubilee said. “That was a while ago. Well we better be getting to class.”
“All right,” Alison said. They walked out of the hole in wall.
“His name is Shiro Yoshida,” Nightcrawler said. “That is his name by day, his mutant name is Sunfire.”
“What is wrong with him?” Rogue asked. She looked on the bed at the dying mutant. “What happened to him?”
“He has been in critical condition for several years now. This is where I have been. Before Lady Deathstrike was killed, she hurt him. She hurt him very bad,” Nightcrawler said. “I don’t think he has very long. I want you to talk with him.”
