As far as the regular figure line is concerned, I’ve always viewed them as mini little statues. Some have more articulation than others, but basically as a whole the line is very limited in how these figures can be posed. The Deluxe line, on the other hand is meant to be posed in many different ways, giving the figure (and the collector) many different possibilities for their imaginations to run free.
When the Deluxe figures were first announced there seemed to be an overwhelming opinion that these figures should be limited only to characters who were major fighters on the show.
In some recent posts I read in ‘ASK DIAMOND’, this attitude seems to still be prevalent (to at least some people).
I don’t get it!
FIGHTING POSES: Yes, I agree that more articulation gives the figures a wider range of poses so that collectors can pose their figures in cool fighting stances, but why should we be limited to only a few select characters?
Example: When MAC first announced they would be making a Tara figure, one of my first thoughts was to pose her with an ax and re-create her “My first axing” moment from the 6th season episode where they bring Buffy back from the dead. (I love that little Tara moment). As we all know now, only one Tara was made. She has a long skirt and teeny tiny hands that pretty much precludes her from any possible posing options.
Other moments I would love to re-create are Anya swinging her bat in ‘The Gift’, or fighting with a sword in the climactic final episode of season 7. But what about Giles in 3rd season, dueling in the library with Wesley, or in other episodes where they show him standing along side Buffy and the other Scoobies going into battle? (I can’t think of the episode names right now). I would love to put a sword in Dawn’s hand and place her in the cemetery with Buffy for some Summers’ sisters battle training. Why can’t we have articulated figures of other characters from the show that we want to pose in a heroic way just like the episodes?
Also, why do we have to re-enact exact scenes from the show? What if a collector is a huge Xander fan and wants to pose him as the hero of the scene, rescuing the fair maidens? These are toys, they are made to be played with, to twist and turn in any way a person wants. The only limit is the person’s imagination.
NON-FIGHTING POSES: This is really why I want more articulated characters than just a select few!
When Diamond announced the new Library play set, I pictured my figures seated around the large table researching the latest big bad. Buffy would be leaning over Willow’s shoulder while Willow sits researching from a book or works on the computer. Cordelia is kneeling at the book shelves searching for that elusive text that will describe how to defeat the latest monster. Oz is walking up the stairs (one foot on one step, the other on the step above) going to check out the stacks. Xander is kicked back with his feet up on the table reaching into a box of doughnuts in his lap. All these actions need a certain amount of articulation which does not exist in the regular waves, only in the deluxe line.
These are only a few ways a NON-FIGHTING character can be posed. I would also love to pose Xander on bended knee proposing to Anya. There are so many ways a figure can be posed besides a fighting stance.
I want the Deluxe line to continue after the Angels and Spikes are released. I want the line to include everyone possible (just like the regular line). My mind is in no way limited in how I can pose these figures. The only limitation I have is how much articulation the figure has.
