Has anyone else felt that recently, with the separation of the Fanfiction and Fan Art threads that the fanfiction is sitting mostly untouched??? Our fanfiction writers are dwindling, with just a few people who have series going strong. I was just wondering if anyone else has felt this way, or has any ideas of how we can get the readership back that the section used to have? I personally think there are too many categories, and at least with fan art, we had people who'd glance occasionally before going to the fan art section. I'd just love to hear anyone's thoughts or ideas - I tried a contest, with prizes, but it doesn't seem to have a huge draw.
Thanks guys!
Hadley

Well this is a small contribution, but just a thought. I don't venture over there much, so I'm just curious...is the Fan Fic section exclusively for Buffy/Angel or can it be about any sort of fan fic that any members happen to write?
I realize this is a Buffy-related forum, but it's obviously so much more than that, too. If other types of fan fic are acceptable, then I think I might just have the notion to start up some of my own. Not a huge revelation but it's something.
EDIT: Nevermind, I guess all it took was 2 seconds for me to look over there and see that other types are allowed afterall. Well then! I just might be starting some of my own, then.

Actually, non-Buffy fanfiction is allowed - and there's even a separate area in the Fanfiction for those fanfics. We have a few started, but there haven't been a ton posted yet.

I think we should have more promotion for fan fiction series like The Second Evi's series and Wicca's. Both strong and well written but I think there isn't really any attention drawn to it. Maybe each series could get one of those header peices so when you are veiwing the fan fiction section you can see "Oh, new episode is up of *insert series*. Maybe I'll check it out." Though I guess that would be alot more unwanted work...

I agree Travis - I feel like when I write and post - it's for a great 5 dedicated readers, but none of the other 650-some people on the board care. I feel like this has happened with some of the board's best fanfic series.

I totally agree with everything that's been said in this thread. We have so many strong fanfictions on this forum but a lot of people seem a little too lazy to make an effort to read them. Although if we do more to advertise and popularize the idea of writing fanfiction then I'm sure we can revive the section.
Travis: I love your idea for a header piece.

Would people participate if we had a calendar of challenges like the customs section?

I'd have a go at something possibly! I don't write much, but I'd like to start doing a fanfic at some point or other.

Would people participate if we had a calendar of challenges like the customs section? I would. It would be fun to do little one-shots every so often

I would totally be up for more challenges in the fanfiction section, I think it has the potential to be as popular as the custom section as long as people are willing to commit.

I'm glad that we have great feedback for challenges!! I'll start a post about taking ideas for monthly challenges once we finish with the fanfiction contest!

I am far from a regular in the fan fic section. I have over 3000 posts and I bet less than 20 of them are in the fan-fic section.
I like the idea that Hadley had for the contest and I think that prizes are one of the best ways to get people involved and intrested.
I know I would have been more than up to giving the contest a try if only I had known about it. If something about the contest would have been on the main forum header I definately would have participated. By the time I found out about it, the deadline for submision had already passed!

I used to read fanfiction a lot (not really at this board), but then I'd be reading and getting really into one of them and then the author would just quit writing without wrapping up the storylines and I'd be left wondering wtf happened. But I think these challenges are a great idea because sometimes it's fun to write without committing yourself to a series and plus all the applicants would send in completed stories so it wouldn't lead to frustrated readers. I don't know if I'd participate in any of these challenges but I'd definitely read them.

What if we had it to where people don't feel they have to read all of them at once. Like: Monday-- Kissing Daylight Tuesday-- Fix You Wednesday-- Wicca Thursday-- SOCF Friday-- Afterlife
am I missing any regular series? I know I've been gone for a while.

You're sweet to have my fanfic in there Nick!
Does your idea include having the fanfics come out on certain days?
(And is that Kristen Bell in your banner??)

I like that idea, it'll be like weekly tv series for a network. Anyways, I posted the first chapter for two fan fics, but nobody commented so they both perished in the hellmouth. Though I could start them again.

SPEAKING of starting up some new ones...
*Cheap plug inserted...HERE!* I just created the first part of one in the section for "other" non-Jossverse related fan fiction! Ch-ch-ch-check it out!

Thanks Hadley. Yeah, that is what I meant. You can only post your fanfic on that day. Like if you don't have your fanfic ready by your day, say wednesday, but you'll have it on thursday, you still have to wait until the next wednesday.

That TV idea would be cool.
Catch the dramatic four vampire series Kissing Daylight every Monday, while tooning in for Hadley's Fix You Tuesdays. Then the criticly aclaimed series Wicca will put a spell on you every Wendsday. Followed by Thurday's witching hour Sorceress of Crimson Falls starring Alyson Hannigan and Amber Benson. And ending the week with the return of Afterlife every Friday.
;D

That's really cute Travis! We should make a small tag with our series names in it (if there's room) with a picture... This may be a huge idea... but, we could have links... Either way - I love the little intro
