Hey guys! I was recently contacted by the webmaster of www.artisticchardon.com about a member who directly linked an image from her website. This is not allowed! You can not directly link something from someone else's site! You must upload the file onto a hosting site (such as Photobucket) and then link it from there. ProBoards takes this issue very seriously, and if we are reported, BtVSFigs could be shut down, so please take this into consideration when linking files to the forum. If you'd like to know a little bit more about direct linking, click here. It'll help you understand why this issue is taken so seriously. Thanks! -CMK

I am very confused about what this means. I give links to other sites all the time, so that people can check them out. Is this wrong? I thought most sites wanted more traffic.
Or is this about people putting their image file links to another site, instead of using Photobucket?

It's just about pictures Maria Sites do want more traffic, but they don't want people direct linking their images and taking their bandwidth.

Maria, it just means when you find an image you want to post(or use as your avatar/signature), you have to upload it onto your own photobucket(or any other image hosting site) and use that url instead of using the image url from the original site. It does get a little confusing sometimes

I have never heard of this before. 1, I don't know what bandwidth is and 2, I have never heard of direct-linking untill today.
I will defiantely be concious of it now.

Bandwidth is a certain amount of space you get each month on the Internet.
Direct Linking is linking straight to an image on someone elses site, or any other type of thing, not really pages though. Like posting someone else video or picture on your site without uploading it to your own personal space first.

This is confusing and could go into so much depth! To be honest i i found a website and someone else is posting a picture off of my website, I'd much rather have my URL on the image than have someone else pass my art off as their own, but rules are rules! Can i be the noisy one, and ask which member it was on the forum?

I've never understood bandwidth either, but I think I get the jist of it now from what you guy's have said.
It wasn't me who linked to that site, but I know I've done it before, to another site, in the "Padme Unleashed" thread, so I'm off to check and potentially modify my posts...

I got quite worried when I received the PM, I thought it was specifically directed at me I agree completely, I run a website and bandwidth is a big issue, I;d be pretty angry if I found out that someone was directly linking my images. If it hasn't already been posted, you should upload any images to a site like photobucket if you intend on posting them at a forum: photobucket.com/

i always use imageshack.us/ myself, just to give everybody more options. It's very easy and you don't even have to be a member.

I got someone stealing like 30Mb of bandwidth from me because he posted my videos on his site. I was actually wondering who it was aswell when I got the PM.

How does someone go about finding out if anyone has directly linked to their image?

Well, you know your own work when you see it because you made it lol. So i think that is how, and right clicking on the image, then going to properties, and it shows you the URL of where the image is being used from

I know you can do it that way, but to do that you have to find the site. There is a way you can do it by looking at something on your site.

Basically a webmaster will check his/her server logs and notice that their bandwidth has changed. Not fun. In the server logs, or masteriD or whatever you say it shows all the iPs of where you image is. So... how the hell do you find the site? There are sites that are used where you can easily enter the iP and any forum or website that matches the iP will come up. Search the website/forum, find the image. Contact and admin.
Or you can be funny and change the url to a dirty or rude pictures. (That's what I like to do. ^__^ ) It's a lot easier to get the picture down if the admin doesn't give that your bandwidth is being stolen.

THats what I did aswell. I changed the picture so it would change to that on their site. They took it down like a week later.

If we notice direct linking going on, what is the protocol for reporting? Do we PM the person who created the link, post on the thread, PM a Mod, what? PM either Flobbster or myself about the situation. -CMK
