I never understand the plan of the first evil on season seven, for some reason the first evil knows all, in the episode Lessons, it talks about cookies and fat children(the speech of Buffy and Angel in Chosen), even the first evil try to forced willow to die and spike to be control, also why the first evil didn't stop Buffy when she got the scythe, for some reason it looks like the first actually wants the activation of the slayers around the world, because it can stop the amulet and it didn't, also the first evil force all people to leave the town, which is weird too, it looks like the first evil knew that more slayers will unbalance the energy even more, that's why it doesn't care about fail, since it will try all in other place and time. I don't know what do you think was the plan of the first? is the first part of WYH and that's why it just doesn't care about the amulet?.

The way I got it - The First had special way of controlling vampires hence the uber vamp army which he could control the way he wanted. I bed The older creatures in the "pit" backed off to let him open the seal and have the vamps out unbalancing the forces in favor of evil and making him corporeal as well as leaving the hellmouth themselves. I don't think he realized Buffy could activate the potentials nor he wanted her to do it - after all he did try to kill them off all off even though with an army of uber vamps dealing with one slayer at a time shouldn't be all that hard. But a slayer army would be far more risky. And I'm not even sure he could stop the amulet - IMO the thing was WR&H idea of doing things their way rather the letting somebody else run the show. So they let Angel help and ruin The First Evil's plan. Perhaps there is more to it but so far neither S8 or S9 dealt with it so who know...

You said an interesting point, why the first evil can control the vampires so well, and we know that the vampires don't have a soul, so maybe the first evil it's more than just evil, if we remember the first in Amends, it forced Angel to killed himself, but maybe that was his inner fear, in some way the first evil is about give up to the fear, and that explain the first evil speech with Buffy on Chosen, this mortal wound, I mean, Buffy can choose to stay in the floor and do nothing, but she rather to stand up and keep fighting.
Now I get it, the first evil can taunts you when you have doubts about yourself, that's why the first stop to taunt Willow, because she stop to feel fear and she embrace herself and do magic for save the world and the same with Spike, It means Buffy was the most doubtful character of the whole season, and that's why the first evil dissapear in the final speech, she hasn't doubts anymore.

I always thought it was weird what Buffy said in Bring on the Night. She said "..until The First shows itself for what it really is". In german she said until the first evil shows its true face. Weird that it came as Buffy herself. I always wondered if that was a hint, or just weak storywriters fault... The way I got it. Buffy was resurrect, the spell Willow did broke the protection of the slayers line, thats why the first got a chance to finaly attack. Girl after Girl was everyone killed who could be a potential slayer. The first tryed to manipulate those who could cause any trouble. The first knew Willow and Spike were powerfull and important for Buffy. In Amends the first tryed to convince Angel to bite Buffy and lose his soul again. He decide to rather die before drinking from Buffy. Jenny said something like " that wasnt the plan, but its fine too... I think the First decided to let Buffy have the scythe because Faith and lots of Potentials just blew up in the sewer. I think it had no idea of its true power, cause like the Woman in End of Days said, it was made secretly. As for the amluet, Im not sure, but weve seen Spike watching Buffy kissing Angel. Right behind Spike was the First again, trying to manipulate him. As for the finale with the Vampire-Army, I think thats the perfect representation of hell. Theres the Devil and his damned souls... in that case the Vamps. I think right before the Vamps spoted Buffy and the Slayers in Chosen they were working (picking stones or something???) so here you can see again how powerfull the First really was. Its not just any evil, its the first

I think I get now, the first evil phrase is: "From beneath you, it devours", in another way to say, from your own fears it devours, that's why it disguise like dead people, as a way to make more effective this and add some spooky twist of the words, the words of the first are true always, because they are the thoughts that people never dare to say, but they clearly feel in that way.
In some way I think Joss Whedon try to said, we are our worst enemy, the first evil, its actually the doubt, the doubt in ourselves, in what really we can do or accomplish, in some way season 7 is about that Buffy felt useless because she is a slayer but nothing more, she can't fit in in the status of the society, just like a singer or an artist, she can't get a normal job and she isn't a teenager anymore, she isn't a college student either.
The whole season seven is a symbol of growing up, that's why at the end the town is destroyed, like a way to say you need to leave your home town or your house and explore the world, for discover what you are able to do, the first evil is also a symbol of the doubt, that's the first evil in everyone, when you have doubts you are hopeless, and this will stuck you for life.
Joss is brilliant in translate this to action, when Buffy is stabbed in the final battle, she was in that state, hopeless and with a lot fear and then her inner fear spoke to her, this mortal wound, then she said get out of my face(and of my head), the doubt isnt in me anymore, she gets up and keep fighting, that's an amazing meaning of life, don't let that the first stop your life, doubt and fear always be inside of you, but like Buffy you need to get up and keep the battle.
The love is put in the balance on the season too, again Buffy can just be with Spike and let that the whole town crush them, but again Buffy leave her love and choose to move on, to me that's a meaning of, if you aren't ready to love, you will enter in the same line again about doubts and fears, and you will ruin the relationship for good, Buffy said to Spike I love you, this is a real thing for a lot of people, how many times we think we love this person, but it's false, we are just feel lonely and thats when we think, that feeling can be balance with love, but that's false, and that's the part of Spike, no you don't.
To me season seven is very brilliant, and it's a reflex of life, adult life, I never understand why I enjoyed this season too much, maybe because at that time I wasn't an adult, but now I clearly understand the whole message that Whedon hides in the season.
Don't let the first evil gets you, you need to stand up like Buffy did and keep fighting.
