Is there a reason why Ron Glass/Shepherd Book has such a small role in Serenity, and Inara for that matter? As they were major characters in Firefly.
Did they annoy Joss Whedon or what.

Well, I don't know much about why Book had such a small role, but Inara had actually quite a large one. Although, nearly all her scenes got cut, meaning that her role became tiny. (Luckily all the cut scenes are on the DVD!).
I guess Joss thought it was right to have Shepherd Book distanced from the Crew. Maybe it was just easiar for him to write with a smaller amount of cast members.

A tad off topic, but Inara did have some amazing deleted scenes, and I wish Joss had kept that, and maybe expanded a bit more on her and what she did (for those who didn't see the series). I disliked Shepherd Book, but I think is role when he spoilerdiedspoiler he had the biggest impact for the movie. So I think he had a big part.

Ron Glass (the actor who plays Book) was very busy, so was not available for a large amount of filming. To get him at all Joss had to make his part somewhat small.

Her part was too small and as if anyone who had never seen firefly would have understood what/who she was. I guess it's hard to make a movie when there are 10 main characters (including the operative). They can't all be given huge chunks of screentime. But i too heard that ron glass (and wash) were hard to get hold of and that's why those two had small parts.

I loved the deleted scene where Shephard greets the crew and takes them from the ship into his village, it made his new world feel all homely and safe and it was nice to see that he'd moved on since leaving Serenity.
I also liked The Operatives deleted scene at the end when he questions why the ship was called 'Serenity'. But, I prefer it ending with his line "There's nothing left to see" which has to be one of the best lines I've heard in a movie.
