On the Art Asylum boards, Diamond Select Toys has answered a question about Serenity figures, and the news is not good. It appears they have decided to f everyone who bought the first figures on faith that the whole cast would be made: knightone: What is next for the "Serenity" line in general? Do you have rights to produce toys and figures from the "Firefly" television series as well? Did the first wave of figures live up to expectations and do you plan on continuing the line?
DSTChuck: Right now nothing new for Serenity is planned. [/b] That is from a Q&A of November 7, so that is as current as you can get.

NOOOO!!! That's such a crock! Why would they do that? I'm so disappointed. I really thought they would make a second series. Wasn't there talk of a definate Jasmine figure in our future? Did I just make that up in my head?

It seems so unfair to tease us with a few figures and then not release more. Can you imagine them releasing Buffy, Giles and Willow without ever releasing Xander?
But, in fairness, I also know the realities of the market. I collected all of Palisades Ren & Stimpy's first wave as well as their Pink Panthers and Fairly Odd Parents, only to have all three cancelled after only one series. Retailers don't buy, toy makers don't create. Shame.

I am betting the first series didn't go too well, and with the lousy paint job, I can understand why. It is too bad....the line was kind of doomed fom the start.

As part of the Whedon-verse, the Serenity/Firefly figures should be treated as the same kind of niche-market figures that the Buffy figures are, i.e., make one or two every once and awhile until they're all made!

This is why I never bought the Serenity figures. I'd rather have none of the Firefly crew than just two.

Well that's a kick in the teeth. It kind of makes the figures that we DO have a little pointless as we're not going to have any of them to go with. That means no River, Zoe or Wash! I mean I can understand why they've decided to stop but from what I've heard they've been selling really well.

Oh crap! Thats not good i actually held off buying the Mal and Jayne until more were announced. I guess if they'd done a better job on them then we would have more but they've just forgotten about firefly/serenity fans .......again!

It is too bad....the line was kind of doomed fom the start. Hmm... why does that sound familiar? Of course if there were a lot of people who held off waiting for more figures, it makes sense that sales weren't great and they wouldn't make more. It then becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy in a way. One thing I would like to say is that this news doesn't render the figures they did make pointless! A few Serenity figures are better than none at all.

See I guess I did not see that the figures weren't selling. Even small stores that never carry figures like this had them...and sold them. I only found one in the suncoast...and they usually the store to have a kajillion languishing around.
Well i am bummed. I guess I can start with the customs now...i was waiting to hear about more announcements before i start on any.

I'm gonna hold out hope on this one. I was at Wizard World Texas on Sunday, and I just asked Matt (JusticeDemon) how well the sales were going. He told me that they weren't the best selling of their figure lines, but they weren't the worst, and that the sales were steady. Also, DSTChuck didn't actually say there would never be anymore, just that there weren't any planned "right now". Maybe if everyone who held off buying them would go ahead and make the commitment, it might improve our chances of getting more.

A lot of times, one department of a company won't know what another is doing.
It's like this past summer and Star Wars. At the summer cons, Hasbro reps said infants Luke and Leia from the end of Revenge of the Sith would never be made as figures. Right now you can walk into any Wal-Mart in the lower 48 states and buy them for $4.77 each.
So I'm sure they've got something else in mind. I think, if they had to, they'd make the rest of the crew available as exclusives. That's one thing DST isn't afraid of doing- exclusives. I want a Kaylee, dang it.

I agree that a Mal and Jayne figure is better than nothing. I don't understand why DST isn't making Serenity (the ship). I think alot of fans who aren't into the action figures may by a ship for their desk.

I'd suspect that they might not have the license for ships... they probably only have it for 6" scale figures.
As for future figures, the fact that they didn't plan any to coincide with the DVD release makes me think it's unlikely that they'll do more. That would've been a key time to release another wave. Of course, Buffy and Angel keep going strong with no specific show releases, so I suppose it is possible. There is definitely the hardcore fanbase there.

Even if Serenity had been a bigger hit, Diamond could not have made a second wave in time for the DVD release. "Once we turn any action figure over to China it takes about 5 months to get it tooled and trouble shot ASSUMING there are no big delays and it's not during the Chinese New Year holiday," according to Diamond's Chuck.
Make of that what you will, but it seems that they must have decided not to make any more figures even BEFORE it was known whether Serenity would be a hit with fans or a hit with the general population of the US. Since Serenity was a hit with the fans, there should be more figures, since Diamond claims they cater to these niche fan bases. But for some reason, they didn't follow through.

That is the issue... rather then a reever, we should have gotten a main character, and maybe 5 characters rather then 2 varients of 2 characters...
Character I really wanted: Kaylee.
I don't know why, but she is my favorite, and would have made an amazing figure. Now... I will have to live with out her.

That is the issue... rather then a reever, we should have gotten a main character, and maybe 5 characters rather then 2 varients of 2 characters... Yep. You've hit the nail on the head. People had a very uneasy feeling about buying from this line, as they were afraid that they'd end up getting two main characters but never get anymore. Had they made 4 or 5 main characters in this wave, you could garuntee that loads of people would have bought from this line as they knew that they were already half way there to getting their full crew. Hopefully I'm making sense here. I'm personally really disappointed that we never got River or Zoe
