According to whedon.info these are the official figures as of the 16th:
Domestic Total as of Oct. 16, 2005 : $22,306,230 Overseas Total as of Oct. 16, 2005 : $6,159,674
Looks like its close to meeting that budget, apparantly it still hasn't been released in most of Europe so that overseas total will probably double maybe treble by the end of the year.
Theres also rumours that the DVD will be out on December 20th. I hope its true because it would get a lot of exposure at that time, and Serenity/Firefly is renowned for DVD sales! I myself am thinking of getting 2 copies, and of course 'Firefly' because my sister wants hers back!
Makes you wonder though if Universal purposely caused Serenity to not do so well at the box office because they knew that the DVD sales will be a lot more stronger.

Yep, I already posted this. It's great news though. It hasn't done that bad then. I can't wait for the DVD to come out and I hope it's in time for X-Mas! And like you said, it still hasn't been released in some parts of Europe as well as South America, so there still a couple more million to be made.

In retrospect, the Sept. release was probably a bad idea. But it's always been more of a project made for great DVD sales and only moderate mainstream success.

I think a late august release would have been better. Pick up a little of the summer movie mentality and keep the excitement from the summer cons up...but still i think it will keep making some money. I know i plan to see it as much as possible on the big screen.

A lot of money from a movie comes from DVD sales too, so there is a good chance that the income will be even higher.

I'm sure the Sept release hurt it, because you just don't have blockbusters outside of summer and the Thanksgiving-Christmas season. I bet the initial April opening would have done better, because people would have been gearing up for Star Wars and maybe want to check out another sci-fi film to tide them over.

I wonder how much better it would have done if it had "Star" in the name. All the big sci-fi franchises have it... Star Gate/Trek/Wars, BattleSTAR... Hmm, I stumbled upon that idea jokingly but now that I think about it, I wonder if sci-fi fans really do need an obvious title that clues them into the content.

True but the whole firefly name came from the type of ship and because it looks just like a firefly.
