I'm so happy it made it to number 1. It was an amazing film and definitely deserved to get there. I hope the figures are really good!

Woo! We rock! I'm so glad it's done so well, Joss and the cast all really deserve the success and from what I've heard it's a fantastic movie. I can't wait to see it later this week!

It took £960,000 in its opening weekend (I'm one of those numbers! lol) and its expected to surpass £1,000,000 by next weekend.
I've made plans to see it again with 5 more people on Friday then again just me and my partner on Sunday. Can't wait!

Why does 960,000 pounds not sound like much to me? Even if I exaggerated the exchange rate that would be almost 2 million dollars. Opening weekend here in the states it made what? 14 million I believe. That's 7 times the amount it made in England. Am I missing something? I honestly just don't get it. Of course the US is also easily much, much larger so maybe that's why for a #1 movie that sounds like so little to me. Aside from that...it's freakin' awesome that it was #1. I saw it this past weekend here in the states and it was great! Nice to see that this movie got to be #1 it definately deserves it.

Mainly because its smaller, but also not that many people still go to the cinema. I know people that havn't been for YEARS! We're more DVD people, lol. But the US has always been a cinema-going country, or at least it seems that way. The last movie to top the UK chart (Pride & Prejudice with Keira Knightley) has made £11.4 million so far, so if Serenity has the same success thats like half the budget made back! Just give it some time to get more recognition.

I was just wondering. #1 movies here are these massive blockbusters that earn 40-50- or 60 million dollars for one single weekend. Here's to keeping our fingers crossed that Serenity catches on because I personally want a Serenity II. lol.

I'm glad Serenity didn't have the star-driven competition in the UK like in the US. Jody Foster's "Flight Plan" was only in its second weekend, so it took the top slot. "Pride and Prejudice" was really the only competition in the UK, and it had been out for a month. (Has anyone seen it? I'd like to.)
Rough estimate: dollars pulled in per capita, taking in mind the exchange rate: I think the movie did about the same in each area.
Either way, I think Universal will have to see those DVD sales before they make a decision. I hope the oft cited numbers of the opening weekend aren't as important as people say they are. I don't get how, with so many factors involved, opening weekend could determine a sequel.

Yeah x-esque, I agree that DVD sales will largely determine whether a sequel happens. The only reason I can think of that such a fantastic movie could make such a small amount (In comparison to how good the film is) is because people aren't going to see it because they havn't seen the series. There is quite a bit of hype for it from critics in the UK (though not nearly enough marketing) but this all came when the film was just about to be released, not giving the casual viewer enough time to buy and watch the series, and then go see the movie.
