i thought that this episode was definately one of the highlights of season one.i mean, since the first episode angel was all mysterious and this ep tells us just a little bit of his history(also the fact that he is a good vampire comes as a bit of a shock). i wish darla hadn`t died as we never really found out anything about her.when she is resurrected in angel(the show, not this ep) we find out a lot about her i just wish they had kept her around for a season or two. i know i would have liked it if in the second part of season two she was there with drusilla, angelus and spike. anyway back to the episode, i give it 8 out of 10

First of all, guys, please stop rushing these discussion otherwise other people won’t replay on time and we won’t have a normal and fun discussion. We agreed to discuss one episode per week so let’s keep it that way.
As for the episode, it’s one of my favorite ones of season 1. It’s full of revelations, thrilling moments and action. We finally find out more about Angel, Darla and the curse, and this sets the bases for the entire Buffy-Angel relationship.

Since I saw Julie Benz recently at the con in Dallas, thought I'd impart some things she said about the character. When she first was experimenting how to act in her vampire makeup, she was looking in the mirror and smiled and realized that was the creepiest thing she ever saw and the essence of Darla. Darla truly enjoys her evil and revels in it, you'll notice Darla is one happy vamp quite a lot of the time.
I think David's lack of acting skills hampered the revelations of Angel's past in this episode. Instead of presenting his past deeds with regret and self loathing, it just came off more as braggy and snotty.

this episode is pure class! acting is on top form, the writing is cool and the humour comes thick and fast even though it is a sadder episode a very well deserved 9 out of 10

This episode was one of the best in the season for me. I really enjoyed the way that Buffy left that cross-print in Angel's chest, and didn't so much as flinch. Beautiful! I was a bit miffed that one of my favorite vampires got dusted in this episode, but she comes back, so it's okay. This episode is an essential for any collection or list of "Must-See" Buffy episodes. btw i dont get the end where angel is left with a cross mark can sumbody explain I'm not sure if I understand your question. The mark was made by Buffy's necklace. And the mark was left there because well, Angel is a vampire.

btw i dont get the end where angel is left with a cross mark...can sumbody explain? Like Raven said, the mark was left by Buffy's necklace. The scene went like this: Buffy and Angel are kissing. Once they've finished kissing, they separate.
Buffy: You okay?
Angel: It's just...
Buffy: Painful. I know. See you around?
Buffy walks away. Angel watches her go. The camera pans down to his chest where her cross has left a deep burn.I believe that it was supposed to be a mix of seriousness and comedy. Buffy thought that Angel was feeling pain because the relationship was 'over.' While he was feeling pain over that, he also was feeling pain because her cross was burning into his chest. I hope this clears it up for you a bit... -CMK

I loved this one.... season one at some of it's best! From the start we knew that there wasn't something right about Angel... lol . I loved the whole Darla/Angel/Buffy triangle going on there. It was so cool when Buffy took the crossbow and went out to kill Angel - Darla was awesome with those guns!!!! You GO GIRL!!! 9/10

i loved this episode, esp the part where buffy goes ona bout how an A doesnt stand for angel, it kinda makes me want to cringe, but i love that bit.
8/10
i agree Davids acting isn't on top form, some of his lines come out sounding abit stiff, and robotic. But all in all i loved this episode.

This was a very good episode. I really like it in how it is the first episode of feelings for each other in a series of Buffy/Angel confrontations. I don't understand why in the early season 1 episodes Angel seems very snotty and stuck-up. These characteristics are later shown (middle of season 2) to be more equivalent with Angelus than Angel. Another thing, which did not bring up any questions while originally watching this episode is in the scene with Darla and the guns. I question it now because I remember watching a season review on the dvd sets, i think it was the boxset for season 2 or 3 and Joss says something like how Buffy is a modern vampire show but they do not use guns. I do not remember the exact words he said but I remember he said the part about "the no guns". This is the only reason why I question this episode. Other than that, very good episode

I chalk that up to David's poor acting skills in the beginning.

I think David Boreanaz is more of a classic Hollywood actor in that he likes to play it cool all the time and although that isn't quite as popular now it is a style and it created a basis for Angel. I would think a man who knows the feeling you get after slaughtering a thousand people in one night really wouldn't react heavily to pretty much anything else. And Angel's attitude in this episode was a little shifty but he was isolated from humans for a few decades because he felt so guilty murdering all those people as Angelus so I wouldn't expect him to be really capable of carrying on a normal conversation with a 16 year old girl, you know? To me, Angel being the way that he is just logically makes sense and I really like that he's not a spaz like most testosteroney male heros...he's just cool .

I like this episode. It's funny when Buffy's trying to explain to Angel about her diary "hunk can mean bad things" I liked Darla in this episode too. -Fred
