I new have a new laptop with the new Windows Vista on it and my old banner program no longer works. I downloaded this GIMP program (Version 2) and I am totally lost on what the hell I'm doing. I'm stuck on pretty much fading an image onto another background image. To be more blunt- the whole program is confusing. If someone who has GIMP would take the time to give me a little walk through on making a basic banner and i will try my best to do things myself. Help would be much appreciated.

i had it myself, had to delet it but i couldnt make making a banner, but here is a tutorial:
When you open GIMP you should get two screens 1) The main GIMP widow 2) Layers, channels and paths. If you don’t see the second one go to File > Dialogs > Create new dock > Layers, channels & paths.
1. Open your base picture 2. Edit > Copy Visible 3. Layer > New Layer > OK 4. Edit > Paste 5. In the layers, channels & paths window you should have three layers now 1. Floating selection 2. New Layer 3. Background 6. There should be a little picture of an anchor at the bottom click it. When you hover your mouse over it, it says anchor-floating layer. 7. Layer > New Layer > OK 8. File > Open (Open the picture you want to blend in) 9. Edit > Copy 10. Go back to your base picture and click Edit > Paste 11. In the main GIMP widow you should see an arrow thing that has arrows on it pointing in four ways click on that the use it to move the picture to wherever you want it. 12. Go to your layer, channels & paths window and you should see the anchor again. Click it 13. In the same window you should see a little green arrow pointing down. It’s just near the little anchor. Click it 14. Then in the same window (layers, channels & paths) click on the top layer 15. In the picture you are blending it will look like the picture you pasted on has disappeared but it hasn’t 16. Now go back to your main GIMP window and you should see a little picture of an eraser. Click on it. 17. In the same window at the bottom you should see all the details about it. Where it says Brush: next to it there is a little button. Click on it and you should get a box that lets you scroll down. Go down the list and you will see a brush called ‘sparks’. Click on it 18. Go to the picture you are blending and using the eraser go over the part where you put the second picture. You should see it appearing again. 19. You’re done! Tada lol when you save you have to save, as thefilename.bmp and then it will ask if you want to export click on the export button and it will save it.
hope it helped for you. someone i know helped them, but not me.

I Use Photoshop 7.0, and i learn new stuff all the time. It was way confusing upon my first few attempts, after being with such a simplistic program for so long (PhotoImpression) but yeah, now, i couldn't do without it! Was looking into buying it for my MAC Book, but its wayyyyy expensive
