Here's Ask Diamond #29:

How did DST decide on the look of the regular Fred's outfit? It's such an unconventional and unexpected choice.

We were very concerned about the cost on the Fred/Illyria figures, so we had to try and find a way to save cost and still get fans the two characters they wanted.

Any chance of adding ball-joint shoulders to the regular line-up? Since the poses are now static, this new feature would allow a great new range of motion, and wouldn't hamper the realistic sculpts much. Either way, I'd rather have this articulation than a square shoulder.

We here at DST are huge fans of the ball joint shoulders, but the thinking is that would be a very radical departure from the look of the previous MAC figures.

Are all of the new Buffy faces scans or are they sculpted? Which are which?

They are all based on scans.

When will Serenity figures hit stores?

A month before the movie 8/31.

How come Jayne doesn't have thigh articulation in his legs?

Our thinking was with all the folds in his pants and the thickness it would not have looked good at all. We tried it on earlier versions, but it just didn't translate.

After spending time at DST's booth at SDCC this year, I noticed merchandise for other brands such as AVP have things like snowglobes and bookends. Are there plans to include products of that nature in the Buffy/Angel line?

Its very possible.

Will we ever see new ornaments of Wesley, Lorne, or Anya? The original ones released for Angel Series II were from the MAC and are extremely tough to track down and the Diamond sculpts are by far better.

We've already announced our Christmas 05 ornaments, so we'll have to see what next year brings.

Will the backs of the new Angel/Fred-Buffy/Dawn bases be able to attach to a wall in some way (i.e. a hook or something)?

No, but that's a good idea we thought off too late, for this series. So we might see what we can do going forward.

If you were to re-do a character again like you have with Buffy/Willow/Spike, will you ever make the same type of variants that Moore originally did? As an example, if the next wave were to include Cordelia, would you consider making a new Cheerleader Cordelia version?

We would not do that.

Any chance we will ever see Fyarl Demon Giles, Riley, or Adam in some shape or form? Obviously the D'Hoffryn made sense with Anya/Anyanka, but the same case could be made for the other figures as well (Possibly a 'True Love' boxset with Buffy/Angel, Buffy/Riley, Buffy/Spike)?

We have no plans right now to release Adam or the Initiative soldier.

If you do plan on making the Willow busts like you have hinted at, will it be two different type of Willows (Like Vampire Willow and Dark With Willow), or something along the line of Spike (One Regular/One vamp)

All our bust releases going forward will have multiple versions.

When will the Ubervamp bust be released?

It's still right on schedule for release this month.

Why make OMWF Dawn a chase figure and not a 2/2 pack, like Darla and Reunion Darla. Why make such a unique sculpt so limited?

The thinking is that Dawn is a weaker character than Buffy, and a short pack will help retailers sell more of their case. For Darla...historically vampire figures have been the best sellers, so we thought one per case would be unfair.

How hard would it be to obtain a scan of Eliza Dushku, because I'd rather wait till a "dead on" likeness can be done. Until then I have my deluxe Faiths to keep me at bay.

We have come close a couple times, but the schedules have just not worked out.

Will any of the two packs/boxsets be based of the Angel line?

I suppose its possible if we come up with a good idea and a buyer - why not?

Regarding the new bases for the Angel/Fred-Buffy/Dawn figures, is the wall part of the base removable for those not keen on the large wall?

Yes, it is two parts.

If new Cordelia figures are possible in the foreseeable future, will she have a line to herself, as Willow did? Or will we have to settle for the 5/3 treatment?

If we did her she would not have her own line.

After Spike, which character will be made into a bust next?

You'll have to wait and see.

When the Deluxe Angel and Spike figures come out, will we see variants from Angel and Buffy or just Buffy?

If Angel and Spike are next we would have versions from both shows.

Is there a third Dawn with a ponytail, blue top and blue jeans?

Hmmm...I better check on that!

Was Clare Kramer scanned at Comic Con?

Yes.

How are characters to be made into figures selected? Or rather, how much of a role do the forum postings play in the decision making process?

We get a bunch of beer and pizza and whoever stays awake the longest gets to pick. Luckily for us, Matt is a light weight.

You have said you want to see how the current Deluxe line does before going forward with it. How long does it usually take to consider a line a success or disappointment, and do you have any information on how the line is doing that you can/want to share at this point?

The line has been well received. We still have some stock to move, but I think everyone is pleased so far, especially considering the luke warm reception that met their announcement.

You might take notice that we weren't told that DST wouldn't be making Fyarl Demon Giles (when he was specifically mentioned in the question). This could very well be a hint as to a Giles figure in our future. :)

I too noticed that he didn't say no to Fyarl Giles. I'm hoping that could mean a figure in the future.

Also, glad to know the Deluxe figures are doing well, and that the Ubervamp bust is still scheduled for this month!

Hmmmm.

Have to disagree on the ball-jointed shoulders. As the question-asker pointed out, there is no "visual" difference between a single ball jointed shoulder and a swivel shoulder. They both "look" the same, BUT one allows a LOT more movement and posing. Its a pity DST aren't considering this, but then again they're not in favour of mid-thing articulation either, something which is much needed with the static poses.

Firstly, I cannot see why a VERY boring looking blue woman in a purple/red dress was needed. But, even going on the fact they needed to share parts between Shells Illyria and Fred, surely they could have come up with a better lower body for Fred? Again, its a pit it didn't happen.

So, DST have so far mentioned that the next "regular" line is likely to be "Buffy" based, but that it will have cross-over potential. Cordelia has previously been named as a figure DST were "likely" to do and we now have a subtle hint that Giles is on the cards. So a Cordelia (5)/Giles (3) wave next? Seems fair as Cordelia needs the most variants to get all of her different looks and Giles (to me) really only needs "stuffy watcher" Giles, "casual Magic Shop/Unemployed" Giles and of course Demon Giles.

Bummer about Angel two-packs and boxed sets. DST's answer didn't sound too promising. Then again they initially said Dawn was unlikely, yet she's in DST's first wave they've done by themselves, so I'm holding out hope that their same cryptic comments apply to Gunn and some Angel boxed set goodness (PLEASE we HAVE to have another Fred somehow).

Getting a tad tired of the run around on some questions. DST previously said that the deluxe figures would be Buffy and Faith, then Spike and Angel. In the last DST they said that the next round of deluxe were off to Gentle Giant for sculpting. I guess there might be business/legal reasons for why they cannot make the announcement yet and I guess I'm 99% sure it will be Angel and Spike. I just want more news NOW!

Same for the Dawn variant. It seems an odd choice to throw in with a Glory based boxed set. Will be interesting to see who they use it.

Hmmmm. I don't recall a lukewarm reception for the Buffy and Faith figures? But maybe my memory is cloudy because I'm STILL waiting for these figures to be available in Australia.

Ask Diamond:

1. Can/will any of the Buffy figures come with either of Buffy's weapon trunks as an accessory? Or would the cost be prohibitive, because unlike Wesley, the Buffy figures are already coming with a base/stand?

2. When will DST announce the line-up for the next series of figures? When the Angel/Illyria wave is released?

3. Have DST considered announcing boxed sets, two-packs, exclusive figures etc before the "general" release of the same figures? Basically, will DST announced the Buffy/Dawn line based two-packs and boxed sets before the regular figures are released to give customers more buying choice as to which they buy?

4. When will the accessories for the Buffy/Dawn line be announced?

5. Can/will Nightmares Buffy (vampire) come with her tombstone or possibly the entire grave as a base?

6. Is there any upcoming need for DST to offer an exclusive figure? DST previously mentioned that "battle damaged" Buffy might be an exclusive "if required". So is there a requirement?

Some interesting stuff here. I think from what they said, we might be seeing that third Dawn figure somewhere, somehow. If it wasn't going to be made, I think they'd have just said no. :)

I didn't really expect Cordelia to get her own line, since neither Buffy nor Angel got their own. Which makes sense, as casual buyers probably don't want 8 variants of the same character, they want different ones. Me, I'd love 8 different Buffys, but that's me.

It also sounds like when we get a Giles wave, there will be a demon variant. I'm not so keen on that as a figure, but I know a lot of people really want one, so that's awesome news. I noticed they didn't say "no" to a Riley figure at some point either, so, more good news for people who wanted that figure. I didn't really like Riley, so that doesn't do a lot for me, either, but I can share in other people's jou. :)

I'm still really hopeful for another Fred somewhere along the line, but I'm not really holding my breath.

I'm glad to hear the wall bases come in two pieces, though. Gives us all a few more options for how we want to display them. :)

question for the next ask DST

I love the new Deluxe figures, and it was great to have new variants of Buffy and Faith after all these years. My one complaint about them is that the figures have no peg holes in the feet to stand them on bases. Will future deluxe figures have these holes?

I posted my question (about Giles, Adam, and Riley) on purpose just to see what he would hint out....very cool!

Questions:
Do you plan to include InkWorks cards in future figures (like the Anya/Tara line) or was that just a one shot thing? (Or is this because Palisades now gives away Inkworks inside their Buffy PALZ)

Will the new ornaments continue to have the strings that are impoissible to unscrew? (The past Willow/Anya/Tara/Fyarl Giles wave was impossible! I broke the pins off inside the heads)

Will we ever get any more statues in the future? (Like the Faith/Dark Witch Willow/Gentlemen)

Would you ever consider mailaway offers? As an example, if someone buys all the figures from a certain wave they can send in the UPC for a free exclusive?

Ah Fyarl Demon Giles! Out of the three that is definietly the one I wanted. Good news.

Also good news that bookends and snowglobes seem to be "very possible".

Since Adam is out of the picture and we have confirmation that Clare was scanned it seems much more likey we'll get at least one Glory.

I wish they would have answered the question about forum influence...

I am just very happy the Angel/Fred-Illyra/Buffy/Dawn bases have removable backs, since I'm not sure I can fit the backs and still have the figures displayed.

But cool! And, I'm happy about Cordeila, I want her to be with someone like Doyle or Harmony.

So Adam and Initiative Soldier arent in the future, but does that mean Riley isnt as well? And what about the Judge? Will we ever seen any of these figures, maybe like D'Hoffryn in a boxset?

No it was announced but never shown. I tried looking everywhere for picks of him but nothing came up. I tried to search on action-figure.com but all that came up was concept art, but all the others had figures.

Don't they realize that the figures are already a departure from the MAC line? Besides the fact that the DST-created sculpts are much better. But if they don't want to depart so much from what MAC had done, where is the bicep swivel on the Willows & Taras? Or the thigh articulation on anything since DST took over?

It's like DST knows they can do better, but they don't want to upset anyone who's been collecting since the MAC days. Frankly they've changed enough from the old lines that I think adding better articulation would be welcome by the collectors. If you want static Buffy & Angel figures, then buy MAC series I or some of the statues...

Sorry for the rant. I just get pissed off whenever DST says something about not wanting to depart from the MAC lines... when they already have ;)

Great Ask Diamond! Clare Kramer Scan!!! I think we all know what's coming next. Im glad that they've actually confirmed Angel and Spike for the Deluxe Line too. I'm very interested in one question though when they asked whether they were going to release Riley, Adam or Fryal Giles - notice they only said they weren't going to release Adam or the Iniative Soldier. That Means a Riley and Demon Giles is still on the cards! Cordy not getting her own line - Bummer. Thanks for such a great Ask Diamond!
